School Nutrition
Association of Connecticut (SNACT) food service directors have the
ability to be teamed up with a Mentor to keep you in the game. New
directors are faced with many challenges associated with school
lunch. As you know School Lunch is a whole different breed of food
service, directors need to know about commodities, menus,
nutritional information, different food products and more. Your
mentor would be your “HELP” desk. You would be teamed up with a
director mentor to help you through difficulties or questions you
may have. It might be a simple phone call about commodities or
maybe you would want to meet with your mentor in person to go over
menus. The mentor would be the “Back-up Plan”.

USDA Fresh Fruit &
Vegetable Pilot Program:
CT has been chosen as one of 6
states to participate in the USDA Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Pilot
program for this school year. Over 40 schools applied for the
twenty five slots. The 25 schools were chosen based on a
number of criteria; rural versus urban settings; elementary versus
secondary schools; high versus low free/reduced price eligibility;
etc. The state was also seeking a variety of distribution methods,
such as offering fruits/vegetables in the classroom, from carts in
hallways, using vending machines and other innovative approaches.
Therefore, schools were selected to ensure a variety of demographics
and distribution methods, to the extent possible. Participation in
the Farm to School Program was also a factor. |
