About Us

What is 5-3-1?
It is the first step to following the USDA’s My Pyramid Dietary Guidelines. It is a great beginning to a healthier lifestyle.

It’s a good place to start!
Every day children should aim to meet the 5-3-1 for Healthy Kids Guidelines:

Strive for 5 cups of fruits and vegetables
Eat and drink 3 servings of low-fat dairy products
Be active for 1 hour per day

The concept of 5-3-1 for Healthy Kids was created to simplify the nutrition and physical activity messages that children and adults are being encouraged to follow.

Unfortunately, many people are not familiar with the details of the past or present Dietary Guidelines. “5-3-1” focuses a few of the major shortcomings in the American diet and lifestyle choices.

5-3-1 for Healthy Kids is one simple, powerful, unified message that is backed by highly respected Connecticut health organizations and agencies including:

Why focus on these three guidelines?
Most people do not meet the recommendations for dairy, fruits, vegetables or physical activity.  Including additional servings of fruits, vegetables and dairy can be simple as well as nutritious and delicious. Being more physically active on a daily basis is one of the most important things people can do for their health.
